INQ28 - Setting the Foundations

Evening folks. Last post I showed you the board myself and my friend, Gaz started on. Well Christmas has come and gone and left me with a voucher for GW, which I promptly spent on this little beauty below.

The Imperial Sector Terrain Boxset. It came to a nice little sum and I've already jumped headfirst into making some terrain for the INQ28 event next month here in Cork. The buildings will be mostly whole, which will leave me with quite a bit of pieces to represent ruined walls at a later point and for a later project.

These buildings will be split in half and will allow for the roofs to be removed for interior drama.

Now I'm going to get back to making more buildings. Hope you've enjoyed this little look into my current work. I hope you had a happy Candlemass and will have a productive New Cycle.

INQ28 - Gaming Board ASSEMBLE!

Today my friend and fellow Brethren, Gaz; helped me start my first 40k board. I say helped, he constructed the whole frame while I talked shite and tried to remember to take photos. This will be for use in the upcoming INQ28 event we have planned for January. What's that you say? INQ28 event? Well, well, well. More shall be revealed in the coming posts.

INQ28 - A Little Twist

Another little addition to the Crimson Court. I'm not quite sure if I'm done with this fellow. At the moment he seems just a little too Lord of the Rings for my liking, but that Bat-like face is so lovely.

INQ28 - The Crimson Court Arise!

So I'm back after a fair bit of time away. A mix of lack of camera, enthusiasm, a promotion and fatherly life has kept me away from blogging and honestly it's been a very reflective time for me. I've come back with a new outlook on the hobby and fresh eyes.

Prepare for some grand goings on and for the moment say hello to my Crimson Zealots, the first of an organisation that may bring ruin to the Gravis Sub and beyond.

INQ28 - Arbiter WIP Build

Two updates in one day? What madness is this?!! I finished kitbashing him tonight. Very much inspired by the work of Gentlemen Johan Egerkrans and Krautscientist. I've a fair bit to do on him yet and honestly I'm not even completely convinced about the head at the moment.
Fluff-wise these blokes will be based on Fentis. It's a swampy wet world so perhaps I'll give them hooded heads and shoulder cloaks.

Hmmmm indeed!

I love TKMaxx. Halloween in TKMaxx is a hobbyist and weirdos dream. I can't count on two hands and feet how many times I've seen something awesome there that's inspired a new drawing or model to make. This time around however it's this amazing skull set. This cost me €9.99 and will be used to create a piece of terrain for my Ashen Stair setting. I haven't completely decided yet what to make of it but the above Rhyme is something I threw together to give some direction. As of yet it could turn out to be a tower or I may chop it apart to use as separate modular pieces. Who knows!

Hobby by Lamplight - My Workspace

Howdy folks,

Bit of a late night post to show where it is I convert my mini's. It hasn't seen a lot of painting action in the past while because of time constraints but every now and again I get my sculpt on and throw a bit of greenstuff about. It's due a tidy and will be getting one pretty soon.

Thanks for having a gander!

Sketch Eternal

I haven't put pencil to paper since before my son was born. It's a shame really because I really love drawing. I just haven't felt the urge or pull. That changed tonight whilst watching Xena: Warrior Princess with my lady and the little man. It's not much. But it's the best I could do with dim light, no reference and a blunt pencil.

I've been working on a Stormcast Eternal miniature conversion for the last while. Gathering the appropriate parts has been painstaking. I've been helped along the way by bits drops from friends.

This character is a mystery even to me. I've this idea of a bulwark of a man. The last of his kind. Standing sentinel over a sundered mountain pass. The ground caked with the ashes of the fallen. Thousands upon thousands of bones half buried beneath grey-black mounds. He bears the relics of those who gave their lives before him. A fallen brother fastened to his shield should they both return home. In this place Sigmars light is but a dim flicker. There is no return for those lost.

Literature in the Underhive!

Necromunda Novels

This is a good day. I managed to nab myself a killer deal from a local gamer getting rid of his old Necromunda novels. Nevermind the fact that I have a bookcase full of unread Black Library novels. Nevermind that I have yet to finish the End Times series sitting staring at me. Judging me. Nevermind that I haven't finished the Ravenor series I nabbed not too long back after inhaling the amazing series that was Xenos, Malleus and Hereticus.

Nevermind all that!

It's time to enter the Underhive, Scum!

Now to get the rest of them.....

The New Realms of Chaos

Chaos isn't a gaping pit waiting to swallow us all.
Chaos is a ladder.
Many who try to climb it fail and never get to try again.
The fall breaks them.
Some are given the chance to climb, but they refuse.
They cling to the Realm.
Or Gods.
Or Love.
Illusions!
Only the ladder is real!
The climb is all there is!

A New Age Begins!

My gaming group has decided to give Warhammer: Age of Sigmar a chance. To begin we've decided to host a little modelling competition amongst ourselves. Pick up a copy of this weeks White Dwarf, post a picture of the Free Stormcast Eternal, unpainted. The following picture should only be of the miniature complete. The miniatures will be viewed by a non-participant and the winner will recieve a little prize. Simple really. I'm excited.

I've played Warhammer for 15 years, so the massive change in the models, lore and rules set has me both excited and wary. I have although always been more of a modeller, painter and lore enthusiast than a gamer so I'm not as bent out of shape as a lot of gamers out there. The Stormcast are awesome models, a triumph by GW in my eyes, as are they're Chaos counterparts "The Goretide". I can't wait to get some paint on this guy. Also, they don't look like Space Marine. Get over it. Sheesh!

Are you looking forward to this change in direction for the game? Yes? No? Let me here from you!

Safe travels folks and beware Old Night!

I'm still alive!....but very tired.

Evening folks,

I thought I'd explain that I'm still kicking and will continue the blogging in the next month or so once things calm down here. My girlfriend, now heavily pregnant with our little one has been hospitalised with High Blood pressure. She is being monitored throughout the day and is currently spending her 11th night there. As much as I would like her to be at home, the hospital is obviously the best place for her to guarantee her safety and that of our future ruler of humankind. She's quite sick of the place as I'm sure we all would be. It isn't nice to be proded, poked and tested umpteen times a day every day. At this point it looks like she will be there until the baby arrives. I'll be visiting her every day until then and have already made massive headway with ensuring the house is baby proofed. Massive thanks to my folks in that department, who came down to Cork for the whole weekend and helped make the house look as awesome and as tidy as it now does.

I'm early awaiting the new arrival and I hope you'll all excuse the absence. I'm sure there aren't many of you out there monstrous enough not to. ;)

As always, safe journey and beware Old Night.

INQ28 - Inquisitor WIP Ascending

So the base model for my Inquisitor arrived today. I can not wait to year this fellow apart and bring you along for the ride! It'll be my first attempt at slicing and splicing together plastic and white metal models. I really like this model and he was a doozy to find.

Sketch - Mad Max Mania!

The other day I left my keys for the house IN the house. So was forced to seek shelter in the local pub, The Franciscan Well. I've mentioned this awesome pub before, with it's awesome beer garden, home brews and clay oven pizza. As the picture suggests I made the most of my visit.

I also did a quick sketch as much like the rest of the internet I have been overcome with Mad Max Mania. This guys name is Lord Glut Sprokketus, Tyrant of the Burning Pass.

INQ28 - Inquisitor Henchman Finished!

-+-+-+-+++-+-+-+-

Henrik Frey planted his boot against the door and pushed. His leg brace whined as the mechanisms worked over time. With a snap the portal burst open and sent shards of rusted metal into the room beyond. He walked in, lasrifle braced against his shoulder, scanning the area. There was no one to be seen. He was not the stealthiest man, he had been told many times, but then again stealth was not his way. If he could not avoid the situation altogether, then guns blazing was the only way. In this regard his braced leg seemed a good match for him, it was cumbersome, heavy and loud, much like himself, but by the Throne you didn't want to be on the receiving end of a kick from it...

-+-+-+-+++-+-+-+-

Apart from a coat of varnish of that will come later. This is the first human model I've painted since I was 14 or so. I'm pretty happy with him, but I'll not lie in saying that there's a lot I want to improve upon. I've learned quite a bit whilst working on him. I think I've captured the vision I had of him. That in itself is a triumph for me.

INQ28 - Henchman Painting continues!

Morning folks! Here's a late night/early morning update on the painting of my Inquisitorial Henchman. I think I have to work on better lighting for my photos as everything looks incredibly washed out in these photos. There's a lot more variance in tone throughout the model. At the moment I'm using the led lamp that I use for painting. I may need to invest in another light source. Daylight would be so lovely, but alas work means I have very little time to paint during the day and I am also a bit of a night owl when it comes to productivity.

I think he's basically done, and I'm in two minds weither I should push the highlights more. Most things have either just recieved a wash or have been highlighted once. As the model was based with a Zenital Undercoat, this means that a lot of the highlights are actually from the white showing through the thinned layers of paint. If you'd like to see more of him or have any suggestions please do leave a comment below. Advice is very welcome!

Until next time folks, stay safe and beware of Old Night!

The Bi-Weekly Treat!

A little treat for myself. With the baby coming soon I'll be keeping hobby purchases tight. I was told by a friend that my local model shop got in some weathering powders, so today whilst on lunch I thought I would take a gander. I'm not sure how they perform so if any of you fine readers have experience with this Humbrol Weathering Powder do let me know what you make of them. I imagine I'll be making a few test models to try them out before using them on any of my current projects.

I also picked up the most recent edition of White Dwarf and so far am very pleased. I'll not spoil any of the internal articles but I'm sure from the cover you can see it's quite a treat! I can't wait to see what people come up with!

Until next time folks, stay safe and beware of Old Night.

Witcher Window Mural Completed!

I just realised I forgot to share the finished mural! I finished this at the beginning of May. So very happy with it and it's my favourite so far. It's also taken me the least time to complete regardless of it being the most technical piece I've ever done!

I'd really like to hear your critique and thank you for looking!

New Window Mural begins! - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I started a new mural today. It's been two years since my Last of Us piece and I thought it might be time to get the markers, rulers and paints out again. What better game to do it for eh? Reminds me, I really have to get finishing that Witch Build....

INQ28 - Update on Inquisitorial Henchman

Here's an update on the Inquisitorial Disciple. I've been chugging away at him when I can in the evening. 10 minutes here. 5 minutes there. He's coming along nicely and I'm pretty happy with him given that he's the third human model I've ever painted. The Zenital Priming really helped with highlights and the jacket really didn't need all that much work! I've to finish off the lower half of him, add some more highlights to the hands, armour and lasgun and finally work in a few markings here and there. He'll be finished next update. Promise.

I have to apologise for the quality of the picture as when it comes to taking pictures of plastics my phone rocks, but throw in some variety in colour there and it goes haywire. I'll hopefully be able to sort that in the next little while.

INQ28 - Henchman Painting begins and Baby Updates

It's not much, but it's a beginning. I've decided to go with the old fashioned pilot jacket colours with a worn brown leather finish. The armour is inspired by the below picture, a work by Karl Kopinski, one of the greatest artists to have produced work for Games Workshop. It's far from finished however.

The idea behind my Henchman is that he is an old imperial pilot, turned smuggler, turned Inquisitorial Henchman/pilot. He's kind of come full circle but isn't exactly unhappy with his situation. He'd be dead if it wasn't for his Employer. With this in mind I'll be throwing some blues in there to represent his time spent in the Imperial Navy, but they'll be very minimal. In fact, with this paint scheme I'll be going for a very minimalistic approach in general. Trying to not get tied up in the details as a way of experimenting on my own part.

I hope you enjoy following my progress and you are very patient to be doing so.

Back with a paint splat!

Hello again guys. It's been a little while since I've posted anything miniature related. I've been kept busy what with work and a baba on the way! The house is now getting to a much more baby friendly state which I'm very proud of myself and my lady for. Not that it was terrible, but we do have a lot of stuff between the pair of us! I've managed to acquire a couple of methods of miniature organisation and have now the means to keep my plastic crack away from tiny hands! Huzzah!

I've been on the scrounge for e-waste of all types with the aim of making my own terrain fit for gaming at home so you'll be seeing some of that in the time to come. It'll be suitably grungy and hive worldy, with a few twists here and there. My aim is for it to be suitable for games of 40k, Inq28 and Necromunda.

As you can see above, there's finally painting going on again! Not for Project Morrslieb or my INQ28 work that's slowly coming together but for my Nids' which are in need of a paint far more at the moment. Our Escalation Campaign is chugging along slowly due to many of us not having the time to donate to playing games. Damn adult life. These Termagants are still a work in progress, requiring one more skin wash, carapace highlights and a base but they're battlefield ready and I'll be moving on to the trio of Warriors I've put together to get them to the same level of completion before applying the last steps.
